What Makes a Good Residential Roofing Contractor?
There are many residential roofing contractors in Mississauga, but some are better than others. It is important you understand what makes a good roofer since a roof is an expensive investment and a leaky or otherwise damaged roof due to poor workmanship can spell disaster in bad weather. According to Ontario’s Ministry of Government and Consumer Services statistics, there were approximately 1,600 inquiries and complaints made about home renovation services in 2015, of which 21% were roofer related.
Workmanship Warranties
We stand by our work, which is the reason we give warranties on our workmanship. Although we are not associated with all manufacturers of roofing materials, most require certified and/or specially trained roofers to install roofing systems if their manufacturer warranties are to apply. Our team has the necessary certifications to avoid voiding your manufacturer’s warranty.
Local Presence
You should only hire a local roofing contractor. It is easy to verify the reputation of a local company since you can view their work on previous projects. If you live in Toronto or Mississauga, hiring us is advantageous in that we understand the local building codes and the local climate and in case of a roofing emergency, we will get to your home quicker, even outside of regular business hours.
Workman Insurance
We have WSIB workers compensation insurance and we are able to share proof of insurance for validation. This means you will not be held liable in case an employee is injured while working on your roof. Our workers have the relevant training to prevent injuries, including fall protection training/working at heights training.
Well Equipped
We have the tools, equipment, and safety gear necessary for any roofing project. Coverall Roofing bends all metal in-house and is customized for each project.
Where do you Search for a Good Residential Roofing Company?
Note that since roofing contractors are not licensed by the Ontario government, you may need to do a little research to get a reliable residential roofing company.
- Get recommendations from friends, relatives, neighbours or colleagues who have previously had good results from a roofer.
- Go through reviews and testimonials in home improvement publications and industry websites.
- Go through Consumer Beware List for complaints and alerts made through the BBB (Better Business Bureau).

An Overview of Shingle Roofing
Shingles are the predominant roofing material in Toronto and the surrounding areas because of their desirable properties, ease of installation and maintenance, and availability. Important attributes of shingle roofing include wind resistance, impact resistance from such things as hail, fire resistance, and solar reflectance.

Shingles are roof coverings made up of individual overlapping elements. For asphalt shingles, the elements are flat and rectangular and they are laid in courses, with each successive course overlapping the joints below.
Asphalt shingle standards are maintained by the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA), which also spearheads research and maintains a classification system alone or in partnership with other bodies.
The base material used in making asphalt shingles is fiberglass. In this case, the core materials are:
- The asphalt-saturated base that is covered with either asphalt or modified-asphalt. This acts as a water-shedding agent and to hold the granules in place.
- An exposed surface that is impregnated with quartz, slate, schist, stone, ceramic, or vitrified brick granules. The granules on the top surface block UV light (which causes deterioration to the asphalt), provide color, and provide physical protection to the asphalt core.
- The under-side, or back-surfacing, is treated with sand, mica, or talc to prevent the shingles from sticking to each other before installation and from sticking to machinery during installation.
- Copper and other biocides are often added to the surface to hinder algae growth.
- Fillers, or mineral stabilizers, are finely-ground materials added to the asphalt during manufacture to increase fire resistance, flexibility, durability, weathering, and other desirable qualities.
- Asphalt shingles also feature self-sealing strips on the underside to provide resistance to lifting during high winds. The materials used for this are typically limestone, polymer-modified bitumen, or fly-ash-modified resins.
As the term suggests, in fiberglass asphalt shingles, the base mat is made up of random-laid glass fibers that are bonded with urea-formaldehyde resin. Fiberglass-based asphalt shingles have better fire retardation capabilities, often getting class “A” rating.
Note that as per 2003 International Building Code Sections 1507.2.1 and 1507.2.2, you can only use asphalt shingles for 17% roof slopes (two units vertical in 12 units horizontal) or greater, and flat roofing membranes for shallower slopes. The shingles have to be fastened to decks that are solidly sheathed.
